INTERVIEW: Erin Foster On ‘More To Me’, Delving Into Brighter Soundscapes And Her Favourite Things About Yungambeh/Gold Coast
Erin Foster is back with her second release of the year titled ‘More To Me’.
Originating from the depths of her Notes app, ‘More To Me’ is an ode to true intimacy. Written about following somebody out of the darkness of your own mind with lyrics, likened to words of a diary entry and nodding to her dreamy bedroom-pop sound and style.
The track exists within a bright and bubbly dreamland that Erin Foster dedicates towards the happiness 2022 has brought to her. A full-circle moment that has translated through to the sonic aesthetics of her recent work.
We caught up with Erin to chat all about the release, delving into brighter soundscapes and her favourite things about Yungambeh/Gold Coast!
Hey Erin, how’s it goin? What’s happening in your neck of the woods today!?
Hi, I’m doing great, I’m at home here on Yugambeh land, Gold Coast, and today is ‘More To Me’ release day! I love how release day entails so much anticipation. You never really know what will happen or who will pick up your song to show it some love.
Huge news, congrats! Can you talk to us about this beautiful new release ‘More To Me’ - what does the track mean to you?
When I wrote ‘More to Me’ I was sorta in my feelings over someone and just writing whatever came to mind about this person. In the verses I talk a lot about this experience of catching feelings, whereas in the chorus I talk about lying to myself in an effort to not get attached. It’s such a dichotomy.
What do you want listeners to take away from it?
First and foremost, I always hope listeners enjoy my tracks. My favourite thing when diving into an artist or project, as a listener, is to immerse myself in the world they’ve created. Music tends to add a whole other layer to reality, and that’s the magic of it.
The track has this gorgeous and subtle house-y vibe to it - what inspired you to delve into a different soundscape with this track?
I feel 2022 has seen myself the happiest I’ve been in some time and I think it might translate through the sonic aesthetic of some of these more recent songs. I’d describe ‘Lovely’ and ‘More To Me’ as more bubbly and somewhat lightweight in comparison to some of my earlier releases (‘Birthday’, ‘Sometimes’, ‘Friends’).
You’ve mentioned that ‘More To Me’ sounds how falling in love feels - how does falling in love feel to you?
I think falling in love feels how ‘More To Me’ sounds (full circle moment).
What does your ideal environment look like when you’re getting creative?
I’m most productive late at night when I’m alone in my home studio with my laptop, my Rode K2 and ambient pink lighting. If I’m onto a good thing, I won’t even notice the passing of time. Next minute, the sun is coming up and I’m still working away at it. If I can stay with a song all night, that's usually a good start.
‘More To Me’ marks your fifth studio single release could this suggest something bigger is in the works…? Perhaps an EP!?
I find so much joy in creating a unique world for each release, and I feel that continuing to release songs as singles allows me to indulge creatively. However, while it’s yet to be confirmed, I’d love to finish this year with an EP.
To finish things up, as fellow Meanjin/Yugambeh residents, we’ve got some quickfire Q’s about our region!
Best place to grab a coffee? I live next door to a Starbucks and I’m too habitual to venture past it.
Favourite venue? I kicked off my tour at Vinnies. It’s my favourite for all the wrong reasons. The sound is brutal. The stage is too small. It’s more of a guitar band vibe. But it's so much fun.
Best op-shop? Check out Lil’J’s vintage markets, they have a cute online store now too.
Favourite up-and-coming local act: I recently did a show alongside Kya Experience, and I love everything her music and brand embodies.
