EP BREAKDOWN: Pure Milk Unpack Their Latest EP ‘Food Court Days’

Pure Milk invite us into their sunny world with their latest EP ‘Food Court Days’. A soft-punk parade of teen angst and nostalgia, ‘Food Court Days’ is a wholesome ode to the glory days, tangled in edge, emotion and growing pains.

Reflecting on the mundane joys and scuffles of adolescent youth, lead singer Lewis shares what the EP means to him.

Food Court Days is an ode to the place where I spent my teen years. As a teen, all I knew about the world probably came from Pacific Fair food court. Those memories – for better or worse – shape who I am today.

Green Fields

Green Fields is about my dog. When he was a puppy, I was sleeping in the shed behind my parents house. He’d sleep at the bottom of my bed every night. We used to talk a lot, 21 years old, post-first- serious-breakup, you need someone like that to tell you what to do. I guess this is my thank you to him.

Dreams on a Platter

Moving to the city doesn’t fix all your problems. Although sometimes it can! I was reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornby and became utterly obsessed with the protagonist Rob Gordon, toeing this line between problematic and concerningly relatable. He was in the back of my mind writing this song, ‘What would Rob Gordon do?’

Men/I Despise

It’s a bit of a pathetic song really. The poor guy spends three minutes questioning his self-worth and comparing himself to everyone around him. It’s got a great beat though, maybe that redeems it.

No Mood

We’re back with Rob on this one. There is this male arrogance that permeates most of the songs and I think here it reaches its peak. When I wrote it the song had 7-8 verses, just saying the same false self- confidence over and over. I was listening to a lot of Dick Diver at the time, I think.

Indecision

This was the last one that was written and recorded. We wrote a few versions of it before I realised I could add some ‘ooh la, la la’s” in the second verse, then that version stayed. We rarely do a song with such a defined chorus, letting the beat drop away before allowing it to explode outwards. I think that was a really fun challenge for us, trying to make it all work.

Food Court Days

This one ties it all in. It’s a bit of a celebration for everything this record is. Growing up and looking back on all the things you did, all the dramatic thoughts you used to have, and how real it all felt. It has 4- choruses, self-indulgent, I know!
