The Terrys + Friends Play Cambridge Hotel

Gerrigong’s alternative surf rock band The Terrys returned to Newcastle’s Cambridge Hotel for their True Colour Encore tour. Having played in Newcastle a few times before, the gig was filled with eager fans of all ages keen to see the fun and energetic 5-piece band play the hits from their latest album, True Colour, which dropped last year. Joined by Wollongong’s Satin Cali and the Central Coast’s Tyrants, it was a great night with the solid line up and a crowd keen for some live music.
Tyrants opened up the night with their indie rock tunes, with a lot of their local fans keen to see them tear up the main room at the Cambridge Hotel. The 4-piece band bought energy and charisma to the stage, showing off their skills throughout their set and utilising the opportunity to shred every instrumental they could. They had good chemistry together, and it was nice to see them get their fans to start a small (and safe) mosh for their last song too.
Wollongong’s up-and-comers Satin Cali were next, bringing a fun and excited amount of energy to Newcastle, as well as their enjoyable coastal rock tunes. The band had a lot of energy in their set, bringing hair flips and heavy riffs to the stage. It was great to see a band play that really was just setting out to have fun and play shows like this to excited music lovers. Satin Cali even treated the crowd to a cover of the iconic ‘Seven Nation Army’ by The White Stripes, knowing that everyone would want to sing along to that track. The crowd really seemed to get into their set and had a fun time with it.
You could feel the excitement in the room as The Terrys were preparing to come on stage, as a room full of hundreds of fans were cheering on the boys to perform. Once they graced the stage, the audience erupted with a big cheer as they opened the set, playing tracks from their debut album and some of their earlier hits as well. Lead by frontman Jacob Finch, the band easily connected with the crowd, making for a dynamic performance between the different band members and the audience. Finch brought his distinctive and prominent vocals to the venue, that was equally as exciting to watch as it was to hear as well, with tracks like ‘Melbourne Bitter’ and ‘Can’t Catch Me’ exciting the fans.
One of the biggest highlights of the night was the band bringing out their Like A Version cover of Ben Lee’s 2005 hit ‘Catch My Disease’, with everyone in the room being able to sing-a-long to the words, and The Terrys even giving the opening two bands a shoutout in the bridge. It was also great to hear a lot of the tracks from True Colour, as the tour was another great chance for The Terrys to promote the album now that the vinyl copies were available. Tracks such as ‘Situation 99’ and ‘Waiting For You’ went off in the Cambridge Hotel, becoming a real treat for the fans of the album amongst the crowd. It was songs like ‘Our Paradise’, ‘Cost The Peace’ and ‘IDK’ that truly made the night special for everyone, with big sing-a-longs in the crowd and a high-energy performance from the band. It was also fun when some of the members of Satin Cali joined them on stage to help perform some of these bigger tracks too, whether it was initially planned or not, before ending the set with an encore performance of ‘Good Day’, sending the night out in spectacular fashion.
Overall, The Terrys triumphant return to Newy was a night to remember, with both new and old hits gracing the ears of the crowd. Both Satin Cali and Tyrants did a great job on the night as the support acts, making for a fun show from all three bands. The crowd loved the energy from the bands, and The Terrys managed to connect well with the crowd on the night too. Thanks for an awesome show; hope to see you all again soon!
