INTERVIEW: doegægé Chats Writing Processes, Inspirations And All Things 'GBER'

Words by Robi Hume

Jumping into the scene earlier in the year, Naarm/Melbourne-based artist doegægé is back with his debut EP after releasing a couple singles throughout the year.

The EP 'GOBLIN BLISS ETERNAL RELIEF', takes you on a narrative journey through themes of guilt, death and life. The sonics are a mixture of unique grimey guitar chords layered with doegægé's cutting vocals.

We had a chat with doegægé all about the EP, song-writing processes, different inspirations and what's next for for the project!

I love the sonic narrative that ‘GOBLIN BLISS ETERNAL RELIEF’ takes you on when listening, and when listening all the way through you’re introduced to the EP with ‘GOBLIN BLISS’, to me it feels like a boy teaching a goblin about life - can you tell us about this introductory track and the EP’s narrative?

This is a sample from my all time favorite movie,

The iron giant. The mental imagery I’ve had for this whole project has been iron giant inspired since the start, and the film shares similar themes with the writing across the EP. “Souls don’t die” is the most important part :).

Your songs are full of hard hitting themes like guilt, life, and death but also love and bliss. Is there a song on the EP that you enjoyed creating the most?

I think ‘THUNDER PERFUME’ was the one I enjoyed creating the most, the whole song came together instantly. Although I had a lot of musical influences on this project thunder perfume stands out as the most unique & original to my own sound. Also the guitar solo is swag as fuck.

You mentioned in the past that this whole EP has been very important for you creatively as you have created all aspects of it, including the visuals. When creating a song do you think about all the other elements that will ultimately connect with it or do they just come into being along the way?

I start with an overarching visual theme like I’m scoring a movie in my head, but the specific visual to match is conceived once I listen back to a fully formed track or demo. The visual ideas play a huge part in how the music sounds.

And follow up. Being so creatively diverse, what is your outlet when you’re not working on music?

My interests outside of music are fashion, sculpture, cinematography and painting. I’m hoping to commit more time to these but music is nearly always my first choice when I’m feeling inspired.

Is there a particular style that you want to explore in the future?

I wanna make grunge music now, I’ve just decided. I’ve been listening to Alice in chains, Soundgarden & Pantera.

Looking ahead, what are you looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to playing my first shows and getting a feel for what it’s like. I’m also hoping to travel and collaborate with other artists:)

Do you have a routine that you always go to when creating and performing?

Not yet. I’m just going with the flow, whatever is natural.

Doegægé is such a fun name. Where does it come from?

Doe is my last name, it’s kinda like a John Doe (unidentifiable body) I also got really interested in Icelandic ligature because it looked so pretty so I messed around with that in it.

What’s on the horizon? Are there any exciting things or shows to watch out for to celebrate the new EP?

I’m hoping to do some of my first shows by the end of the year, but I’m really preparing new music I want to put out :). Also potentially a deluxe version of goblin bliss eternal relief ♣️👁️
