‘Drug Store’ (Waste My Time) was the product of breaking down another song and rebuilding it. The original song was about craving closeness and time together.
We worked with producer Fletcher Matthews whose song writing ethos I find really inspiring; Put simply, a song that is catchy, melodically memorable and interesting when sung and played on an acoustic guitar around a campfire… is a banger.
So, that’s exactly what we set out to do! We broke the song down into sections, perfected melodies, and lyrics and only then, when we thought we had a banger on our hands, did we move onto the other instruments.
We were after layered guitars and anthemic vocals; and that festival sing along type guitar solo.. Na Na Na Na Na…
The final product is about having a mega crush and fantasising about spending all your time together (your imaginary life together). We’ve all had those weird crushes right, where you couldn’t even explain to yourself why you had it? Yeah, me too!
'Drug Store' is sung quite high in my range, and it was really fun getting to explore a bit of a different tone than I usually use.
I think my favourite thing about recording is getting to spend 7 full days (hinting at something to come?!) working creatively with my best friends, coming up with exciting ideas and eating Chinese food!
'Drug Store' is just the love child of eggplant dumplings and good times!
