Rose RoGers Releases Debut EP ‘Paper Dreams’ - INTERVIEW
Brisbane indie singer-songwriter Rose Rogers released her highly-anticipated sophomore EP 'Paper Dreams' yesterday.
Coupled with an exclusive launch show at Blackbear Lodge last night to celebrate the release, she performed to a thrilled and energetic packed crowd.
Rose is quickly becoming one of Brisbane's most promising new artists, with 2021 set to be a huge year for the talented song-writer as she cements herself as a passionate and honest multi-instrumentalist artist who cares deeply about giving people music to be moved by.
We were lucky enough to attend Rose’s exciting launch show and had a chat with her about the EP, the connection ‘Paper Dreams’ has with her younger self, and her writing and recording process.
Hey Rose how are you!?
I am doing great! Exhausted from a busy few months but I’m here and I’m ready!
First things first, for anyone that isn’t familiar with you – describe your music in 4 words...
I get this question a lot and I never really know how to accurately answer it haha, but to narrow it down: Soulful, Adventure, Indie [and] Pop.
Now yesterday you released your debut EP titled ‘Paper Dreams (which is phenomenal), talk to us a bit about that – how did it all come about!
CRAZY! I have waited so long for this day, I wrote and recorded this a good 4 years ago, so it’s a very bizarre feeling to finally have it released. I was only about 18/19 when I first started writing it, I was in a completely different chapter of my life. Pretty much traveling and living it up, I guess that influenced my songwriting at the time and it eventually came to be the theme of the EP.
The EP title ‘Paper Dreams’ is basically referring to when you write all your goals down on paper or draw something you’ve imagined or anything creative really and eventually turning that into a reality. Every time I’d tell my Dad about anything growing up (good or bad) he would always say “why don’t you write a song about it”, so I guess that’s exactly what I did!
What does the EP mean to you?
It’s connected to a younger chapter of my life, so I guess this EP will always be a nice little flashback to that moment in time. It’s also significant to me being my first official release, so when I hear these 5 tracks I remember myself as a young 18-year-old writing these songs in my bedroom. It’s pretty cool to be standing at the end of the tunnel looking back at the whole journey.
What do you want people to take away from it?
I guess every person interprets music so differently, so for someone to simply be able to feel something from it or relate to any part of it or get lost in it, would honestly be so incredible. Music is such a powerful thing and if I can give people music to be moved by then I feel that I would be fulfilling my musical purpose! (Or then I feel pretty damn content)
What’s your typical songwriting and recording process?
I used to think my process was super strange but only recently have I felt comfortable with it and realised there’s no “normal” way to write music. I start with chords first, then the melody. I rarely write lyrics first. I usually hum a melody or even sing some nonsensical gibberish until I start piecing it together and actually using real words.
As for recording, I’m definitely no audio engineer, I have a lot of fun with GarageBand so I usually just record my originals through there and tweak it until it starts sounding like what I imagined.
What can we expect from you for the rest of the year!?
I have a lot of unfinished gems that I plan to record and hopefully release this year! I’m so keen to continue writing, I think it’s going to be an exciting year for music. My next big musical goal would be to release my first Album.
