INTERVIEW: Dusty Releases New Hard-Hitting Indie Rock Track ‘Do You Care?’
Seasoned newcomer Dusty returns with a hard-hitting new indie-rock record titled ‘Do You Care?’. Following up from her debut release ‘Easier’, Annie Newcombe’s new project is starting off with flying colours.
But ‘Do You Care’ shows a different side to Dusty as she delves into a rockier, more rugged sound with the introduction of her band. The track is full of conviction and punch, powerfully honest and raw in its delivery its a new sound for Dusty and we are very intrigued to see where it goes.
Recorded with Brock Weston at his new studio Brock's Place, Dusty had the honour of being the first band to record in the space.
Annie says the single was written about wanting to know how someone feels about you.
"I was writing about that feeling of wondering is someone actually cared about you, or whether you were just someone to pass the time with," she said.
“When I wrote the song I was just sitting on my bed. I wrote the verse riff and I thought it was pretty cool so I decided to build on that. The first line that came was ‘if I asked you to stay the night, would you hold me, would you hold me tight’, I liked the lyrical concept so I just built from there.
“As soon as I wrote the chorus I envisioned playing the first repeat solo and having the band come in on the second repeat. The first time we did it in band practice it was like ‘yeah that’s it’. Harley played the guitar riff that repeats through the song the first time we jammed the song, I think that riff really shaped the rest of the song tonally.”
We had a chat to Annie about the new release! Check it out…
So, you released your new track titled ‘Do You Care’ today, talk to us a bit about that. What does the song mean to you?
This song is a really special one to me as I wrote it just before Dusty had formed and it really was the beginning of my creative vision for the band. The whole song came so easily which is when I know it’s meant to be shared. I think those kinds of songs always feel the most special to me as they’ve been created effortlessly without judgment on my own work.
Tell us about the songwriting and recording process?
We recorded at Brocks Place. It was such a fun day as it’s the first single we’ve recorded together as a band. I think the coolest thing is the energy that is in the room when we are together. I think that’s something we are all really grateful for as it creates so much room to feel inspired and bounce of one another!
What do you want listeners to take away from this release?
In terms of the songs meaning, I think everyone has been there, seeing someone and wondering what the go is. I think mostly I just want people to be able to sing the chorus with a sense of ‘yeah fuck that guy/girl/person’.
What influenced the track?
At the time I had been listening to Julia Jacklin on repeat and I really love her storytelling, that was a big influence for me lyrically. Angus and Julia Stones self-titled album definitely influenced the vocal performance and guitar tones.
