INTERVIEW: Rude Rum Return With Their Punchy New Single ‘Talk’

Brisbane power trio ‘Rude Rum’ return with their latest groove-rock single ‘Talk’!

Filled with voltaic showmanship, arterial adrenaline and pure grit, Rude Rum have released some killer tracks since they debuted in early 2019, but this might be their best yet…

Igniting into the world with a zestful stride in front of a riff driven anthem, ‘Talk’ combines the unique groove energy Rude Rum fans love, but with a bolder statement.

Inspired by an experience of intolerable confinement with a loquacious individual, ‘Talk’ displays White Stripes rebelliousness with Royal Blood modernity. Hooked in with a euphoric chorus, chaotic tension is portrayed through a primal rhythm supported by attitude hazed vocals.

Speaking on meaning behind the track, lead singer Jaedon Ogstan says

It came about from my annoyance at listening to someone talk waaay too much about themselves to the point of agony. That first lyric line is my favourite “Talk a little louder maybe I can’t hear”... a lil sassy remark that really sums it up!"

Boy do we hate the sound of someone yapping on about themselves 24/7, but we could listen to Rude Rum all freaking day… good thing we did an interview with them!

Keep scrolling to check out our chat with the trio about the new track, the interesting meaning behind their band name and loads more!

Goooood morning Rude Rum! It’s release day, how the heck are we!?

JAEDEN: GOOOOD, feelin stoked about everything!! It’s been such a long time coming for this single release haha so keen it's out!

First things first, for anyone that isn’t familiar with ‘Rude Rum’ – describe your music to us in 4 words…

JAEDEN: Voltaic, Groove, Fresh, Tasty

INDIA: Rock-n-roll, Catchy, Groovy, Dirty

JONO:  Drums, Bass, Guitar, Jaeden

Now, tell me about the name? I know Jono is a strong advocate for rum, how about you Jaeden and India? Whats the backstory?

JAEDEN: Okay so basically Rude Rum is a play on words from a rum they used to distill back in the day in Jamaica. They called it “Rude To Your Parents” because it was that potent it’d get ya so knocked out that you’d accidentally be rude to your mum and dad ahaha! Basically, event organisers would serve it early on in the night at their shows to put other event promoters out of business later on in the night… cause everyone was too out of it because of this Rum.

I thought this was a pretty funny story plus I liked the way the shortened version rolled off the tongue… turns out to be a pretty good fit cause our shows are pretty high octane.

INDIA: I used to enjoy Captain Morgan, a lot! That’s what caught my attention when I first heard the name!

JONO: I like rum and rum likes me. Seems pretty straightforward.

So, today you have released a zesty new single titled ‘Talk’, talk to us a bit about it!

INDIA: ‘TALK’ is an energy-fueled, rock n roll tune, as soon as Jaeden showed me his idea from the song I knew we had to record it next!

How did it all come together and what does the song mean to you all?

JAEDEN: I still remember the day I wrote it haha, pretty much it came about from my annoyance at listening to someone talk waaay too much about themselves to the point of agony. That first lyric line is my favourite “Talk a little louder maybe I can’t hear”... a lil sassy remark that really sums it up hahah

INDIA: We’ve all been there at some point I think. Someone talking too much about themselves constantly - you do end up wanting to sarcastically tell them to shut up!

JONO: I joined the band a fair bit after the others had written the song. I saw them play it live a couple of times with Van actually. So I wasn’t there for the initial writing process but I have always loved the dynamics of the tunes. Plus it's really fun to play on drums.

And what do you want listeners to take away from the release?

JAEDEN: I just want it to make people feel good! Whichever way they interpret it, I just want people to get amped and energised when they listen to it.

What’s your typical songwriting and recording process?

JAEDEN: I’ll let India and Jono talk about the recording process cause that’s their jam haha. Songwriting wise, it varies from tune to tune… most of the time I’ve got the song pretty much done, take it into a jam and do final arrangement and development as a live ensemble… which I really like cause I can really refine the song over time rather than forcing the writing process in a rehearsal session that has a time limit.

That said, other times I’ve just had a riff or half a song, and if it wasn’t for jamming it out with India and Jono I wouldn’t have really knew what else to do with it ahah.

INDIA: Yeah Jaeden shows us the basis of the song, I hear what kind of layers, backing vocals, tones etc we could play with in the recording process and how we can make it still sound like our live shows, but with a little something more. Building and sculpting the song as a band really helps and Jono is a whizz when it comes to engineering.

JONO: I’ll just talk about the recording process for this song as it’s the only one I have been involved in thus far. We had a good mate of mine, Cody McWaters produce, engineer and mix this one for us. He came to a couple of rehearsals and really helped us finalise the tune arrangement-wise. When we tracked it at Black Box we tracked everything in one day which was very cool. Most of it was live tracking with some overdubs but the gist of the song was recorded live. I was a big fan of the live tracking process as I thought it really captured the energy of our playing as a group.

What else can fans expect from Rude Rum for the rest of the year? Could we be seeing more new music?

INDIA: We’re playing a few shows Septemeber 3rd-18th as a South East QLD tour in celebration of our release in Ipswich, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. New music wise, we may have a few things up our sleeves!

Now to support local, give a shout out to 3 other artists making their way through the music scene that you love.

JAEDEN: Straight off the top of my head Blussh, Verum and Tripsitta… I’ve been loving those bands, especially Blussh cause I remember seeing an early gig of theirs at Tomcat and thought it was rad! Been following them ever since

INDIA: Verum are awesome, I also really dig Jollee and for something fresh and different, Ruby Gilbert!

JONO: I’m really getting around Mozza’s stuff at the moment. I’m keen to play with them at our Brissy release show. Cheap Date is another one to look for right now and Annoying Neighbours is killing it right now.

Finally, to wrap it up let’s do a few rapid-fire Q’s:

·         Best song to mosh to?
JAEDEN: Bulls on Parade… that song is mad live

INDIA: Too many choices, off the top of my head I’m going to say ‘Break Stuff’ by Limp Bizkit. Only because it’s a classic!

JONO: Hannah Montana Theme Song. If you know, you know.

·         Favourite Brisbane venue?
JAEDEN: Tomcat

INDIA: Love Tomcat, also can’t go wrong with The Triffid, whether you’re playing there or seeing a show!

JONO: At the moment, Probably King Lears. I said Tomcat in the last interview I did with you so better mix it up.

·         Best beverage?
JAEDEN: The Sazerac… Rye Whiskey and Absinthe cocktail… it’s vibe.

INDIA: Hit me with anything that isn’t too sweet.

JONO: Rum….. Duh

If you could tour with one artist, who would it be?

JAEDEN: Foo Fighters… dream big baby hahah also Dave Grohl is my spirit animal (love you Dave)

INDIA: I was going to say someone else, but I agree with Jaeden on this!

JONO: Yeah touring with Dave Grohl would be fun. Could try and swap places and see if anyone notices.
