Interview by Aaron Griffiths

Heralding a long history of musical hits, Crooked Colours are back with more beautiful ear-worms. Their auditory response to the spicy-flu-that-shall-not-be-named; ‘Tomorrows’ and its pre-release singles, hit hard and capture the eternal longing for escape.

We caught up with the lads of Crooked Colours to hear all about their new album and tour! So while you delve into the trio’s magic world, checkout your chat with the trio all about where they’re most keen to play, to where their songs began; dive into the minds of these Perth darlings and have a peek behind the curtain.

Hey legends, what’s been going on in your lives?

Hey! We’ve just wrapped up our Aus Tour. It was a big vibe getting out and playing new songs from the album. Now we are getting ready for the album to drop, then heading to the US.

To kick things off, Ungrained would love to know which Crooked Colours song represents each band member best?

Phil: Love Language - Delicious vocals

Leon: Holiday - Synth goodness

Liam: Fight Night - Big drum energy

Now, your third studio album, Tomorrows, has just dropped today congrats! What were your musical influences going into production?

Basically we just dive into all kinds of different stuff. From garage to Rnb to electronic music. We don’t have any specific genres that we focus on. I think that shows through in our music, with all the different elements we add to the production.

What highlight moments stick out from the production process?

It was the first time we had our own studio where we could set everything up and just focus on writing music. In the past we have mainly written music while touring or in our own houses. So being able to come in everyday and just write music was great for us.

Holiday is the most recent single drop from Tomorrows; which boasts bold indie party instrumentation and an infectious hook, where did the song start?

In our studio here in Fremantle WA. The initial idea came when WA had a hard border with the rest of the world. We all felt like we needed a Holiday to escape all the madness that was happening at the time.

The singles from Tomorrows thus far have been bangers, are there any specific songs from the new album that you’re eager for fans to hear live?

We played some new songs on our recent AUS/NZ tour which were a bit more chill and we were surprised how well they were received. I’ll keep it under wraps what songs we play!

Your sound has evolved elegantly over the course of your musical career, where do you think Crooked Colours is headed next?

We were listening back to our old music the other day and it was a bit of trip. We definitely feel like a song writing has changed dramatically over that time so it really leaves us in a great spot to write whatever we feel like next.

Tomorrows heralds a psychedelic trip of an album artwork, what was the inspiration?

We love working with Leif Podhajsky. Everything he does is incredible. We went to him with the idea of trying to blend our faces together, and he basically sent back the finished product. So it was a fast process and we are stoked with how it came out.

You’re set to head across the world for your tour, where are you most excited to play and why?

Your Paradise Festival in Fiji. Even though it just a DJ set we love going there and soaking up the sun and cocktails!
