INTERVIEW: Wet Season Chat New Music, Touring And Playing At ‘Tea & Crumpets’
Interview by Archie Waterson
We caught up with the legends of Wet Season ahead of our epic Sunday-sesh min-fest, and had a massive yarn about New Music, Touring And Playing At ‘Tea & Crumpets’
Check it out!!!
Hey legends, how’s it going? What’s been happening in your worlds?
Our world is going real great. Just the music one and not the one outside of music because that one is heccas. We’ve been laying pretty low trying to catch a few lungfuls of air while we wait for the finishing touches to be done on our debut LP. So yeah the good news is in our world - it’s going.
But we’re also currently writing our second album for some reason, which is before we’ve even released our first so stay tuned for newer music to immediately follow our new music.
I see you all just finished your first ever tour, how did the tour change your perspective as a band?
Also heccas, but definitely got us super excited to hit the Brucey and go beyond what we know. We’re pretty lucky to have a bunch of good friends in bands and solo projects that have trailblazed the path many years before us, and they couldn’t recommend ripping into our own tour in our first year highly enough. The floorboards are actually pretty fun to play to. It also changed our perspective on 6am flights. Rookie tip: a 2hr window post gig to sleep then get to oversize baggage truly sucks.
What was one album that you guys played a lot of whilst on the road with the tour?
A whole bunch of guitar-ish albums mostly. A bit of Ought, Cola, Fontaines newy, Traams. Benny our resident metalhead made the plunge into Slowdive’s catalogue and went on a journey to enlightenment. Timmy definitely listening to podcasts on how to make your band big.
I see you guys have just announced that a new album is on the way, what’s one word you would use to describe the new music on there?
Guitar-soaked? Are hyphenated words one word? If they are we would mention that Moderator is high-energy-noise-featuring-intertwining-guitars-over-drivey-rhythms.

For anyone who hasn’t delved into your tunes, how would you describe your music in 4 words?
Heaps fun to play.
Who’s the biggest influence on the sound of ‘Wet Season’?
Hard to say but we guess that most of our influences come from a whole bunch of different songs and not so much a certain artist? Trying to encapsulate our favourite moments from bits we’ve heard - if that makes sense. Sometimes that’s a section of a melody, maybe a Sonic Youth bridge or whatever. Anything to try and create refreshing sounds out of a guitar.
Playing on the name ‘Wet Season’, what’s your favorite record for a rainy day?
Kikagaku Moyo’s records for sure. Also badbadnotgood’s III, Jose Gonzales stuff, Pete Rock & the InI’s Center of Attention record. Good friends JimmyBarrel & Emu swear by Sade. If it’s Mission Beach rain though, nothing beats the sound of torrents of water on the tin roof
Have you guys played at Greaser before? If not, what are you most looking forward to with playing at the legendary Brissy venue?
We actually haven’t played Greaser before so we’re hell keen for the hot, sweaty, loud crowd. Those mean little whiskey apples too. Couple of them and Benny will be swinging from the fan.
With it being the Queen’s birthday public holiday, what’s one vinyl that you’d buy Lizzy as a gift for her birthday?
Girl & Girl’s Divorce EP!!!!! Absolute pearler. Or a classic Bowie record. Maybe even one from Timmy & Cam’s Mum’s collection called ‘Songs of the Humpback Whale’ - no word of a lie that exists on vinyl and is very soothing on the tinnitus.
Speaking of, with her recent passing, what’s the best album to have a cry to?
There’s a few Devendra Banhart songs that Marco really loves, he won’t confirm how many tears though.
If you all became King/Queen for the day, what song would you change the national anthem to?
Djapana by Yothu Yindi.
GOAT Brisbane band?
Violent Soho has the top spot for us. Savage Garden also gets a special mention for providing the soundtrack to childhood birthday parties cutting laps at the local rollerdrome.
Before you go, who are your favorite local Brisbane acts right now? And why?
Oh straight up Girl & Girl, Mouse and VOIID for the alt/post-80s-90s butter, and also one of our favourite live acts Nice Biscuit for their mesmerizing stage presence. Shoutout to Yonder 2021 for that one.
