INTERVIEW: Big Blue Eyes Chat New Music, A New BBE Era And Playing ‘Tea & Crumpets’. Oh And How Sweaty Greaser Gets…

Interview by Archie Waterson

We caught up with the Ryan from Big Blue Eyes ahead of our epic Sunday-sesh min-fest, and had a chat all about chat all about new music and maturing their sound, a new Big Blue Eyes Era and playing ‘Tea & Crumpets’. Oh and how sweaty Greaser gets…

Check it out!!!

Hey Ryan, how’s things? What have you been up to?

Hey Archie, things are great! Been working on an EP with my friend Eloise this week which has been great to get back into the studio.

You’ve had a break from live shows recently, does this point towards new music coming soon?

Absolutely! I moved to Brisbane from the coast this year so it’s taken a bit to get the new live band back up, but time away from shows has let me slave away on recordings behind the scenes. Definitely keep your eyes and ears posted for something coming in the next few weeks.

How has your perspective changed for the new music coming out, in comparison to your last album?

I definitely feel like my writing is maturing as I am personally, both sonically and lyrically. I got the teenage heartbreak stuff out of my system with the first record and I’m pretty excited to share these new songs which cover a lot of my personal life over the past few years.

For anyone who hasn’t delved into your tunes, how would you describe your music in 4 words?

Groovy Heartfelt Indie Rock

How keen are you to be performing again?

Soooooo keen. I’ve noticed with the new lineup that there’s a bigger live energy in the way we’ve jammed out songs and just let ourselves loose. I think there’s a great balance of doing the recordings justice but also making the live experience have its own energy.

Best live act you’ve seen this year?

Definitely have to be Parquet Courts or Tyler, The Creator who I saw back to back at Splendour. Totally different vibes but both have incredible songs and stage presence.

You’ve played a few shows at Greaser before, have you got a personal favourite moment at the venue?

I played Greaser’s Hekka festival last year with Big Blue, which takes the cake for the sweatiest gig we’d played. But it was just after releasing the album and we were on a pretty solid run of shows that I look back on pretty fondly. I also had to get you to pick up all my gear for me a few days later after some poor gear management from myself! Stressful times…

As it’s the Queen’s birthday, what’s the best tune to get people in the mood at a birthday party?

Tequila hands down.

With Queen Lizzy’s recent passing, what’s the best album to have a cry to?

Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago has to be everyone’s #1

If you were the King for a day, what would you change the national anthem song to?

Lift Yourself by Kanye would be absolutely hilarious to sing as a national anthem. I want to see a full football stadium scoopidy wooping with pride.

Your favourite local act at the moment? And why?

I think everyone is well aware by now Girl and Girl is absolutely killing it lately. I just think their catchy riffs and lyrics are pretty unique in the scene at the moment, and they pull off this really raw and exhilarating vibe in their live shows.

Lastly, on the topic of bands with ‘eyes’ in their name. Who would win in a staring contest out of ‘Big Blue Eyes’ and ‘The Lazy Eyes’? And why?…

I like to think my Big Blue Eyes may intimidate enough for the win, but don’t put it past me getting distracted at which eye I should be looking at.
