INTERVIEW: Radicals Release Cathartic New Single ‘I Hate Myself’
Article by Darcy Goss
Sydney-based alternative-rock trio ‘RADICALS’ unveil a cathartic new single titled ‘I Hate Myself’ - produced by Daniel Antix at Def Wolf Studios (SCABZ, Raised As Wolves).
RADICALS consists of Brandon Wade, Myles Harrison and Nick Karim - three school friends who are quickly garnering a reputation for their loud and energetic live sets.
While only in their infancy, the trio has quickly created their own unique blend of alternative rock and grunge, taking cues from luminaires Silverchair, The Vines and Nirvana.
Erupting with roaring distorted guitars and booming drums, ‘I Hate Myself’ is a cathartic slice of sincere grunge, led by the magnetic yet sorrowful vocals of lead singer Brandon Wade.
As the track unfolds, the soaring choruses momentarily make way for a foreboding but tender bridge before the full-bore final chorus thunders towards its chaotic yet satisfying ending.
We caught up with the fellas to chat about RADICALS, how the band met (it was destiny) and the new release.
G’day fella’s, how are we!?
Brandon: I am so tired Darcy. How are you?
Myles: 200%
Nick: Good!
Me too Brandon, me too… Now first things first, for anyone that doesn’t know ‘RADICALS’ – describe your band in 4 words.
Brandon: Loud and sometimes good.
Myles: Rock n roll baby.
Nick: We play music man.
Love it. How did the three of you meet and form the band!?
Brandon: I went to high school with Nikki and primary school with Myles. I always wanted to be [a] drummer in school but Myles always beat me. Now he’s still drummer in the band even after primary school. Bogus. But anyway, one day I hit the boys up and was like lets do a band thing, now here we are.
Myles: Brandon hit me up and was like '“do you want to join a band” and I was like “yeah I want to join a band” - now we’re in a band.
Nick: I went to high school with Brandon but hadn’t met Myles until Brandon brought him to our first prac. I got a text from Brandon one day saying lets jam and the rest is history.
Seems like destiny. Now you released a brand new single on March 19th titled ‘I Hate Myself’ – talk to us a bit about that! What does the song mean to you guys?
Brandon: I wrote the song when I was going through a rough time. It was a lot darker originally but I eventually got out of that slum and starting feeling better. So I kind of re-worded the song to say “I hate myself sometimes, but that’s okay”.
I could be crazy but I feel like everyone can relate in some way. It’s okay to not feel okay sometimes.
Myles: I don’t really understand it, to be honest. But I know Brandon’s weird so it probably has some meaning.
Nick: No idea what the songs actually meant to mean, but it’s catchy.
Don’t worry Brandon, I understand it haha! So, what’s the typical song-writing and recording process?
Brandon: They start off very basic, then I bring them to the boys, Myles works his magic, Nikki works his magic and basically save my ass.
Myles: Brandon brings them in, then we add some sugar, spice and everything nice.
Nick: Brandon writes all the songs and then brings them to us at prac. We just sit around running through the riffs and patterns for a couple of hours until it all falls into place.
Magical. What can fans expect from RADICAL’s for the rest of the year!?
Brandon: Hopefully songs that don’t progressively get worse and plenty of live shows where people can stand!
Myles: New songs and plenty of partying.
Nick: More shows and less covid!
