The Butterfly Effect Presents: ELLA FENCE

Joining us at our second edition of The Butterfly Effect will be Gold Coast’s broody, power-femme musical shape-shifting queen - Ella Fence.

Embracing re-invention, Ella is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and lyrical genius, whose hypnotically captivating and cinematic electro-pop muse is something you won’t want to miss.

She creates and sings of authentic, personalised experiences. She’s literate and sensory, unapolagetically demanding and passionate.

We had a chat with Ella about the importance of The Butterfly Effect, what it’s like to be a female in today’s music industry and why we still have so far to go…

Show some love and check it out…

First things first for anyone that isn’t familiar with your project – describe your music to us in 4 words…

1. Go

2. Listen

3. On

4. Spotify

Now you released a stunning dark, electro-pop EP titled ‘No Thank You’ this year, talk to us a bit about that! How has the response been and what does the record mean to you?

ELLA: I've loved sharing this body of work. People really connected with 'More To Life', the song about just that - feeling like surely there's more to life than "this". It came as a bit of a shock how many people feel that way. It was pretty neutralising.

This EP was the end of an era and was a hugely important part of closing that chapter. My music is moving towards more live instrumentation, a heavier sound, with more tenacity and viscerality.

What do you want people to take away from your music?

ELLA: Be nicer and take better care of each other.

What does it mean to be a part of Ungrained’s ‘Butterfly Effect’?

ELLA: I love what you guys are doing, this is so awesome thank you for having me.

The creation of ‘Butterfly Effect’ is to showcase, celebrate and support QLD up-and-coming female and non-binary musicians – why do you think this is of importance?

ELLA: It's so important to get these voices heard. It's so often female and non-binary musicians' voices are overlooked and events like this one give us the opportunity to be at the forefront. It also creates a platform for younger artists to see representation and have something for themselves to aspire to - the old "you can't be what you can't see".

Now, tell me about your experience in the music industry – As an artist has how you identify affected aspects of your career? Have you experienced sexism/inequality firsthand?

ELLA: Of course. It's horrible and it's in most places, and in most things. Sexism and inequality is a daily challenge for so many people, in and out of the music industry. I do my very best to be as forward and outspoken about the things I will not accept, and I do this consistently. I do my very best to surround myself with people who do the same, consistently.

Do you think there’s a double standard in the industry and that it is much harder to succeed in the industry when you are from a marginalized group?

ELLA: Of course. It's either harder for you, or the way in which you are marginalised becomes your "thing". You can't just be an artist, you have to be a "female artist", and in ways that can be used tokenistically.

If you could change one thing about the Brisbane/GC music industry, what would it be?

ELLA: More parties.

What do you think needs to be done moving forward?

ELLA: Less support for sportsbet, more support for live music and music venues.

Now to support local, give a shout out to 3 other female/non-binary artists making their way through the music scene that you love!

ELLA: Hayley Marsden, Hope D and Eleea
