Joining us at our second edition of The Butterfly Effect will be Sunshine Coast’s home-grown pop princess - Isabel Wood.

Soothing vocals, vulnerable lyrics and infectious melodies are just a snapshot of what you can expect from ‘sad bop-pop’ star Isabel Wood!

We had a chat with Isabel about the importance of The Butterfly Effect, what it’s like to be a female in today’s music industry and why we still have so far to go…

+++ We chat about her new upcoming single ‘Allergy Season’ set for release on September 10th!

Show some love and check it out…

Hey Isabel, how are you!?

ISABEL: Pretty good thanks, and you?

We are so good! First things first for anyone that isn’t familiar with your project – describe your music to us in 4 words…

ISABEL: I can do it in two! Sad bops.

Now we heard somewhere along the grapevine that you’ve got a brand-new single coming out very soon… The day before our event to be exact!! Tell us a bit about it! What can fans expect?

ISABEL: Yes that is correct! My new song is called ‘Allergy Season’ and it’s the song you put on after you’ve had a cry in the bathtub and you’re ready to laugh at yourself because you just had a meltdown over nothing lol. I’m suuuuper excited for this release, it’s definitely my favourite so far.

Who did you work with on the track?
ISABEL:
I’m so lucky I got to work with Konstantin Kersting on this one, he really nailed the vision. Just a cheeky collab with one of the best producers in the country, no big deal.

What do you want people to take away from your music?

ISABEL: I’m just making music that I would want to listen to and hoping there are people out there that will connect with it too.

What does it mean to be a part of Ungrained’s ‘Butterfly Effect’?
ISABEL:
It means a lot to be a part of something that so heavily supports females in the music industry which is something I’m obviously very passionate about too.

The creation of ‘Butterfly Effect’ is to showcase, celebrate and support QLD up-and-coming female and non-binary musicians – why do you think this is of importance?
ISABEL:
This is extremely important for so many reasons. Bridging the gender gap in the music industry is no easy feat and The Butterfly Effect is a great way to keep that conversation flowing. It’s time for all the ladies and non-binary’s to be heard!!

Now, tell me about your experience in the music industry – As an artist has how you identify affected aspects of your career? Have you experienced sexism/inequality firsthand?
ISABEL:
Well firstly, the amount of times I’ve walked into a music shop and the men behind the counter ignore me or assume I don’t know what I’m talking about is laughable. I mean, sometimes I don’t, but they don’t know that right? Even though it’s 2021 now and things are heading in a much better direction for us gals, there’s no doubt in my mind that there’s a long way to go and I can only hope we get there one day.

Do you think there’s a double standard in the industry and that it is much harder to succeed in the industry when you are from a marginalized group?
ISABEL:
Well yeah. I guess it really depends on who you work with too though. I make sure to surround myself with amazing men and people who are extremely respectful and fair so I personally haven’t had to deal with anything too bad.

If you could change one thing about the Brisbane /Sunshine Coast music industry, what would it be?
ISABEL:
More opportunities for live music (especially on the Sunny Coast).

Now to support local, give a shout out to 3 other female/non-binary artists making their way through the music scene that you love!
ISABEL:
Oh Bailey, Dennis. and Moon Saloon are all killing it at the moment.

Finally, to wrap it up let’s do a few rapid-fire Q’s:

·         Best song to sing in the shower to? Paolo Nutini – New Shoes

·         Favourite venue? Solbar

·         Best beverage? Almond milk choccy shake

  • Fun fact about you? Not to toot my own horn but I’m kind of a Ping-Pong master

·         If you could tour with one artist, who would it be? It’s gotta be Taylor Swift right?
