Reminiscing About Memories On Tour With: THE GROGANS
Before touring was a thing of that past (thanks a lot COVID), it was a way for artists and their fans to connect with each other and party along to their favourite music together. After just releasing their latest album ‘Day/To/Day’ Melbourne’s garage-surf-trio The Grogans would usually be setting out on a run of shows across the country to promote and celebrate their new release.
But while the future of a Grogan’s tour is still looking rather grim, we were lucky enough to catch up with the fella’s to have a look back at some of their fondest tour memories!
“Touring is the best thing ever … it’s exactly what we always wanted when we were kids in school. But it's also no different to just hanging out with the boys in general. We have always done our tours on a very low budget, on our first tours we would drive the van the whole way, sleep in swags and tents, live off coffee, beer and public BBQ’s and sleep very little.”
“Touring now is similar but we now fly a bit more and sleep inside. I remember playing Brisbane to a crowd we never expected which amped us up so much especially as we don’t take it too seriously. That night was a really late one and we got back to the hotel and passed out. The next morning I got up pretty early around 8 and went for a stroll around the streets as I never can sleep in. About an hour later I heard this huge alarm going off and my first thought was ‘holy shit, what did the boys do!’,
“So as I walked back up to the hotel and from about 100 meters away I saw the whole entire hotel standing outside with fire trucks everywhere and then I called Gus to see what was happening. Angus, Jordy and Will basically slept through the alarm and were standing outside in their undies on the 10th floor balcony completely clueless as to why the alarm was going off. I just couldn’t understand. I called Angus and all he said was ‘Oi Quin, could you please go and suss the severity of the situation, maybe call us back after, cheers!’.
“I think it was just an accident alarm set off but it could have been a lot worse. Very true to the Grogan style them just hanging on the balcony while chaos was taking place.”
Some of their other times include...
”We were in Ulladulla and had just played one of the quietest shows on that tour, probably played to about 30 people, but it was the best 30 we could ask for. Our good mates Debbies rocked up with a few of their mates and were having an absolute time. Before the show we had a few pre bevs with a couple of people who were coming to see us, on their boat which was pretty crazy. After the show we were hanging out with the Debbies boys, ended up going to someplace called the dreamtime. It was a pretty fun show. “
“This was takin at the pub in Thirroul. We rocked up There and got a message from our best mates ‘Auntie Leo and the Backstabbers’, they were heading to a show up the coast too.”
“We meet up at the pub and just sank a few beers, after a couple of hours we hoped back in the van to drive to our Sydney show. Will obviously drove because we couldn’t. Legally. Jokes. “
“This pic was at the Loch Hart Music Festival we played last November. Was such a sick festival! Everyone there was so into it, they all got around every band that played there. This pic was taken behind all the portable toilets.”
“This one was taken by our good mate Jardine, he takes a whole heap of our live photos. This was our album, launch at the howler. Best. Night. Ever!”
“Nah seriously, it was so sick it was our first album and we were so stoked to be launching it. Gus in this photo is shredding as usual and most likely telling Quin the lyrics too. Great flick.”
“This one is also in Ulladulla, the day of the show. We’d just driven from Melbourne and finally got there which is why Quin and Jordy look so tired.”
